‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Phototherapy is clearly enjoying a wave of attention. You can now buy light-emitting tools targeting issues like dermatological concerns and fine lines to muscle pain and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device equipped with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a major advance in personal mouth health.” Globally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, soothing sore muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and long-term ailments while protecting against dementia.

Research and Reservations

“It feels almost magical,” notes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Sunlight-imitating lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to boost low mood in winter. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Various Phototherapy Approaches

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, like examinations of infrared influence on cerebral tissue, finding the right frequency is key. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).

UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” says a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, in contrast to LEDs in commercial products (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

Potential UVB consequences, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – meaning smaller wavelengths – which decreases danger. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” says Ho. And crucially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – unlike in tanning salons, where oversight might be limited, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Red and blue light sources, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red light devices, some suggest, help boost blood circulation, oxygen utilization and cell renewal in the skin, and stimulate collagen production – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Optimal treatment times are unknown, proper positioning requirements, the risk-benefit ratio. Numerous concerns persist.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, a microbe associated with acne. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. If it’s not medically certified, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects

At the same time, in innovative scientific domains, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he states. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that results appear unrealistic. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, though twenty years earlier, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he explains. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”

The advantage it possessed, nevertheless, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” explains the neuroscientist, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is generally advantageous.”

With 1070 treatment, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. At controlled levels these compounds, says Chazot, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: free radical neutralization, swelling control, and cellular cleanup – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.

Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations
