Federal Government Halts Billions for Chicago Transport Projects
A government halt on $2.1 billion allocated for Chicago's infrastructure plans was announced on the end of the week, as stated by OMB Director the budget director.
Targeted Projects
Among the initiatives targeted by the budget pause are the public transit expansion, which was planned to start building in 2026 and improve mass transit to less served neighborhoods in the urban area.
Furthermore, upgrading projects on a variety of public transport routes were also paused.
Justification for the Pause
The budget director wrote on X that the funds was “paused to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting.”
The declaration comes after a similar action in recent days involving New York, where Vought said that $18 million for transportation would be halted, including financial support for a planned train tunnel under the river.
Federal Shutdown Situation
This decision occurs as the US government shutdown enters its third day, with the upper chamber planned to take a vote later in the day.
Regardless of the anticipated legislative action, there is little confidence that a resolution is imminent, as Democrats hold out for a set of health-focused concessions.
Broader Effects
At the same time, a growing amount of national offices and personnel are clearly blaming opposition leaders for the stoppage.
The political messaging by departments could be a violation of the government ethics law, which forbids public servants from engaging in electioneering.
Laid-off public servants at certain departments have been directed to set email responses explaining that they are not working because the Democratic party initiated a shutdown.
A radical left has chosen to shut down the United States government in the name of reckless spending and obstructionism,” the treasury department’s website reads.
Even, advisories over economic damage are not stimulating conciliatory moves.
An analysis by an economic analyst said that every week the shutdown persists will mean a multi-billion dollar hit to the national economy.
